South High has a long history of accomplished athletes and athletic teams. DGS offers 32 programs, giving students a variety of options in which to participate. Our student athletes, supported by our dedicated coaches and voluteers, are a source of pride to our entire community.

Tryout Information
Any student who wishes to try out for a sport must have a physical on file in the DGS Athletic Office that will last the entire season. Once a student registers via SNAP, they can upload their physical directly.
DGS Mustangs Spring Sports 2025-26
Start Dates, Times, and Locations
All athletes must have a physical on file in the DGS Athletic Office. Additionally, every athlete must be registered online before they can try out or practice.
Badminton (girls):
Tryouts begin 3/2/26 at 3:30 pm. All levels should meet in the field house. Make sure you have workout gear and shoes. Contact Coach Oberle with any questions.
Baseball (boys):
Tryouts begin 3/2/26
Varsity should meet in the field house at 5:15 am
Freshmen and Sophomores should meet in the large gym at 5:30 am
Make sure you have workout gear and gym shoes. Contact Coach Orel with any questions.
Gymnastics (boys):
Practice begins 2/16/26 Contact the DGN athletic department for tryout information: Ms. Janice Sanders, Department Administrative Asst. All athletes should register on the DGN athletic website.
Lacrosse (boys):
Practice for all levels begins 3/2/26 at 6:00 pm for all levels in the Stadium. If weather is too extreme (extreme cold) tryouts will be at 8:00 pm in the large gym and fieldhouse. Running shoes and cleats are required. Helmet, Stick, and all pads are required. Contact Coach Zawlocki with any questions, or for equipment questions.
Lacrosse (girls):
Tryouts begin 3/2/26 at 6:00 pm for all levels at DGN Carstens Field. All athletes should register on the DGN athletic website. Contact Ms. Janice Sanders, Department Administrative Asst. or Coach Gargiulo with any questions or additional information.
Soccer (girls):
Tryouts begin 3/2/26 at 3:30 pm for all levels on the 63rd St.east-Field Turf. If weather is too extreme (extreme cold) tryouts will be 5:30-8:30 pm in the Large Gym for all levels—remember to bring workout gear and dress for conditions. Contact Coach Hernandez with any questions.
Softball (girls):
Tryouts begin 2/23/26 All levels will be at 6:00 pm in the fieldhouse and large gym. Make sure you have workout gear and gym shoes. Contact Jim Cushing with any questions.
Tennis (boys):
Varsity tryouts begin 3/2/26 at 3:30 pm at the DGS tennis courts weather permitting. If weather forces us inside, varsity tryouts will be moved indoors to Midtown Athletic Club on 63rd Street and Clarendon Hills at 6:00AM and this information will be shared out at the end of the week before. Fresh/Soph/JV will begin with the first day of practice on Monday March 9th after school at 3:30PM at the tennis courts. Check the website for any changes to this schedule. Track (boys):
Indoor Practice begins January 20, 2026. Athletes who plan to come out for track & field after their winter sport should register now during their season. Winter sport athletes currently in a sport MUST email Coach Finley prior to their winter sport ending. Athletes must have at least 2 weeks of practice before they are allowed to compete in a meet. Track practice is 3:35-5:30 each day. Contact Boys Head Coach Juankeem Finley with any questions.
Track (girls):
Indoor Practice for all levels began January 20, 2026 at 3:30pm. Athletes who are finishing a winter sport at DGS will begin once the winter sport has ended. Those athletes need to contact Coach Plunkett BEFORE the winter sport ends. Track practice is every day after school from 3:30-5:30 pm and on Saturday mornings.. Contact Girls Head Coach Doug Plunkett with any questions.
Volleyball (boys):
Tryouts begin 3/9/26 at 3:30 pm. Varsity and JV should meet in the large gym and freshman in the small gym. Make sure you have workout gear and gym shoes. Contact Coach Kurt Steuer with any questions.

Instructions to Register:
- Log on to the Athletic Website (create an account if you do not have one)
- Click "Begin Registration"
- Each legal form must be accepted by BOTH the student and parent/guardian (you cannot proceed if both boxes aren't checked)
- Once your student athlete is confirmed on a roster, you will receive a notice to pay the athletic fee to be paid on the District 99 webstore
- Send us your current sports physical (see "Sports Physicals" tab)

We need to be the first point of contact for all athletes in the event of any injury. We work with parents, coaches, doctors, and physical therapists to create a well-rounded team of care.
- We are at the school Monday through Saturday providing medical coverage for all practices and games
- We are here to deliver the highest quality of care for your athlete as well as answer any questions that you may have
- We are available to attend a doctor’s appointment after an injury has occurred so that we can provide additional information as well as answer any questions that you, your athlete, or doctor may have
- When needing physical therapy or orthopedic evaluation after an injury we will help your athlete get set up, as well as communicate with their Doctor/Physical Therapist throughout their treatment

Team Doctors
Dr. Singh is a Pediatric Sports Medicine Physician who specializes in non-operative musculoskeletal care. His clinical practice is in Naperville at the Advocate Outpatient Center located at 1508 Aurora Ave. Dr. Singh joined as a Team Physician for Downers Grove North and South High Schools in 2022.
Dr. Kirk is a Sports Medicine Physician who specializes in non-operative musculoskeletal care. His clinical practice is in Downers Grove at the Advocate Good Samaritan Campus in the Health and Wellness Center located at 3551 Highland Ave. Dr. Kirk joined as a Team Physician for Downers Grove North and South High Schools in 2022.
